Why should you use a low flow shower head with diesel hot water?

When travelling in an RV or boat, or living in an off-grid home, water supply is often limited. Using a low-flow shower head is therefore an effective way to conserve water and fuel while still enjoying a comfortable shower and a usable flow rate from your hot water system.

For context, a typical residential shower head flows at around 8–9 litres per minute. In off-grid and mobile applications, low-flow shower heads generally operate in the range of approximately 2–5 litres per minute.

Diesel hot water systems operate as a hybrid between instant and storage systems. While they are not continuous and cannot supply high flow rates indefinitely, they perform very well at lower shower flows. In practice, a flow rate of around 3–5 litres per minute is more than adequate for a comfortable shower and allows hot water to last long enough for normal use.

Dieselheat supplies a range of system sizes to suit different needs. Our DH Hydronic systems range from 9 to 30 litres, while our E-Solar systems range from 15 to 40 litres. This range reflects the balance involved in choosing a hot water system: smaller, lighter, and more compact systems provide less hot water, while larger, heavier systems can deliver significantly more hot water for customers who have the space, water capacity, and desire for longer or higher-volume showers.

Dieselheat stocks a range of high quality low flow shower heads which we source from the USA and which we have tested and no work well with our hot water systems.
